DIY Asbestos Testing - Best in Class

I inherited my parents circa 1987 house in Savannah. It was built with popcorn stucco ceilings and had linoleum floors installed. I had contractors lined up and ready to deal with it when I got asked for an (absence of) asbestos certificate. They stopped putting asbestos in these products in 1977 but there are no guarantees (apparently) on installs 10 years later.

I spent an hour plus looking for an asbestos testing service at reasonable cost and a "results yesterday" option. It took a while to figure out that DIY was just taking the sample not the actual testing. You can buy a kit from Home Depot et. al. and get it delivered to you or the store in a week. The kit is some cheap gloves, a B/S mask, a baggy and instructions and a courier label. But the cost ($7-8) does not include the lab fee and the reviews of the folks making that kit suggest you might get the results in a few weeks. Good luck. All the other options available seem to be variations on that theme. Wait for the kit and then mail it off and hope.

I found MyCote with some digging as it is basically a recent entrant in asbestos testing. You buy the "lab testing" by the sample online. They email you the instructions, chain of custody document and a pre-printed overnight label. You supply your own gloves, mask, baggy and envelope which most everyone has. You take the samples, fill out the form and stuff it in an envelope, took about 10 minutes, if that. I took it to Fedex myself, I don't know if Fedex would have picked it up.

That was Friday afternoon. I had the results (negative) back Monday. Would have been 24 hours without the weekend.

I called the company at the outset with a few questions and got the owner (Jack) on the phone, that never happens these days. He also called me when they got the results before they emailed them, so, at least for now, you cannot beat the customer service!

This is the way to get an asbestos test done unless you want to spend more money and wait a lot longer. They have only been in this business a few months but they have the same price or better as anyone and you can get results in 24 hours without waiting to get a B/S kit delivered. The future is here!
