Nevada's extensive mining history has left asbestos contamination concerns across the state. Naturally occurring asbestos has been documented in multiple Nevada counties, and historical mining operations used asbestos in numerous industrial applications. Pre-1980 structures in Las Vegas, Reno, Carson City, and other Nevada communities may contain asbestos in floor tiles, insulation, pipe wrap, ceiling tiles, and roofing materials.

Older Las Vegas and Reno neighborhoods have significant pre-1978 housing stock with lead-based paint. Nevada's rapid post-war growth created extensive suburban housing development between 1950 and 1978, much of which used lead paint. Before any renovation that disturbs walls, trim, or painted surfaces in a pre-1978 Nevada home, lead dust testing is strongly recommended.
