Utah's extensive mining and industrial history — including copper, coal, and uranium mining — has left asbestos contamination concerns across the state. The Salt Lake Valley has documented industrial asbestos use, and pre-1980 construction throughout Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, and other Utah communities may contain asbestos in floor tiles, insulation, ceiling tiles, pipe wrap, and roofing materials. Vermiculite attic insulation — which may contain asbestos — was widely installed in Utah homes during the 1950s-1980s.

Older Salt Lake City neighborhoods, Provo, Ogden, and other Utah communities have significant pre-1978 housing stock with lead-based paint. Utah's population growth created extensive suburban housing development between 1950 and 1978, much of which used lead paint on exterior and interior surfaces.

Pre-Renovation Testing

Asbestos and lead paint testing are both strongly recommended before any renovation project in a pre-1980 Utah home. Disturbing either material without proper precautions creates serious health risks during the renovation process.
